"Fuck and kiss you both at the same time"

The Daily Mail basunerade nyligen ut “SENDING BABIES AND TODDLERS TO DAYCARE COULD DO UNTOLD DAMAGE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR BRAINS”. Även andra brittiska medier hängde på rapporteringen.

På både sin blogg och i sin Guardian-krönika skriver Ben Goldacre om the Bad Science bakom rapporteringen. Nyhetsrapporteringarna stödde sig på en artikel i The Biologist av Ari Sigman - "an author of popular sciencey books about the merits of traditional values" - och enligt Goldacre framställer den både individuella studier på ett felaktigt sätt och väljer subjektivt ut enbart studier som stöder Sigmans egen tes.

Han skriver:

"Let me explain why this behaviour is a problem. Nobody reading The Biologist, or its press release, could possibly have known that the evidence presented was deliberately incomplete.

[....]

It wasn’t a reasonable summary of the research literature, and that wasn’t just a function of Sigman’s unconscious desire to make a case: it was entirely deliberate. It is exactly as bad as a deliberately flawed experiment, and to present it to readers without warning is bizarre."

Och han avslutar med att kritisera The Biologist för att om och om igen ge sin läsare subjektiva artiklar utan varning.

"The Biologist has actively decided to continue publishing these pieces by Sigman, without warning. They get the journal huge publicity: and fair enough. I’m no policeman. But in the two-actor process of communication, until they explain to their readers that they knowingly present cherry-picked papers without warning – and make a public commitment to stop – it’s for the reader to decide whether they can trust what they publish."

Medan Assangefallet fick personer som exempelvis Malin Siwe och Pär Ström att oroa sig för om ordet "våldtäkt" används för frikostigt eftersom "allmänhetens" bild av "riktiga" våldtäkter är att någon blivit penetrerad vaginalt, analt eller oralt (Siwe och Ström avfärdar därmed till exempel att en man skulle kunna våldtas - på "riktigt" - av en kvinna, såtillvida hon inte använde något tillhygge av något slag) (dock håller jag med om problemet med att frivilligt sex mellan två relativt jämngamla där den ena råkar vara under 15 kallas våldtäkt), skriver Hugo Schwyzer på The Good Men project istället "we need to get over the myth that men are invulnerable to sexual victimization at the hands of women":

Real victims only feel pain, never arousal – or so far too many people still believe. An erection, or better still, ejaculation, functions as proof that a boy wasn’t really harmed. Most predators who molest children and underage teens know this; many sexual abusers go to great lengths to try to arouse their victims. The child’s pleasure functions as a kind of absolution in the mind of the abuser; “I can’t be that bad if I made them feel good!” 

In conclusion: Man skulle inte tro det efter det här året men vi behöver fler diskussioner om allmänhetens syn på våldtäkt och om problemet med synen på penetration som den enda "riktiga" formen av såväl våldtäkt som sex. Och vad den synen leder till.
